Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

There is no "wrong" time to climb Kilimanjaro—only better-prepared climbers and better-equipped teams.

Succeed no matter the month.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure—and choosing the best time to climb can make a big difference in your experience. At Vanda Tours, we guide trekkers throughout the year, but some months offer better weather, clearer views, and a more comfortable journey to the summit of Africa’s highest peak.

Understanding Kilimanjaro’s Climate

Mount Kilimanjaro has five ecological zones—cultivation, rainforest, heath, alpine desert, and arctic summit. As you ascend, the temperatures drop significantly, and weather conditions can shift rapidly. Kilimanjaro does not have four traditional seasons like many parts of the world; instead, it has wet and dry seasons, which significantly affect trekking conditions.

Best Months to Climb Kilimanjaro

January to Mid-MarchDry and Mild

This is one of the best times to climb Kilimanjaro. The weather is generally dry and sunny with excellent visibility. You may encounter some occasional short rains, especially at lower elevations, but the conditions are usually favorable. Temperatures at the summit are colder, but clear skies offer stunning sunrise views from Uhuru Peak.

Advantages: Fewer climbers than in high season, scenic views, moderate temperatures.
Drawbacks: Slight chance of short rains.

Mid-June to OctoberPeak Dry Season & High Season

This is the most popular time to climb. The weather is at its most stable, and trails are dry and easier to navigate. Visibility is excellent, with breathtaking views of the mountain and surrounding plains. It coincides with the safari high season, so it’s a great time to combine your climb with a wildlife experience.

Advantages: Best weather, less rainfall, great for photography.
Drawbacks: More crowds, higher demand for permits and lodges.

Months to Avoid

April and MayLong Rainy Season

These months bring heavy and persistent rainfall, especially on the southern routes (like Machame and Marangu). Trails are muddy and slippery, increasing the difficulty and risk. Although the mountain is still open, this is not an ideal time unless you’re very experienced or prefer a more isolated trail with fewer people.

Advantages: Very quiet, peaceful trails.
Drawbacks: Wet conditions, limited visibility, high summit failure rate.

NovemberShort Rainy Season

Rains are less intense than in April-May, but still present. Routes on the northern side of the mountain, such as Rongai, are slightly drier and may be a better option during this period.

Route Recommendations by Season

  • Dry Season (Jan–Mar & Jun–Oct): All routes are suitable; Lemosho and Machame are especially scenic with good weather.

  • Rainy Season (Apr–May & Nov): Consider the Rongai Route (driest path) if you must climb during these months.

Summit Success Rates by Season

Climbing in the dry season improves your chances of reaching the summit due to better weather, trail conditions, and fewer disruptions. Wet season climbs often see higher rates of altitude-related issues and summit turn-backs due to cold, wet gear and rough trails.

There is no “wrong” time to climb Kilimanjaro—only better-prepared climbers and better-equipped teams. At Vanda Tours, we offer climbs year-round and provide professional guidance, gear rentals, and support to help you succeed no matter the month.
