Planning a safari in Tanzania can be exciting but also overwhelming if it’s your first time.

Your Questions Answered

Planning a safari in Tanzania can be exciting but also overwhelming if it’s your first time. At Vanda Tours, we aim to make the experience smooth, safe, and spectacular.

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions by our clients—answered in detail to help you prepare for your adventure.

1. What is the best time to go on a safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time to visit largely depends on what you want to see. The dry season from June to October is considered ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes and the bush is less dense. This period also coincides with the famous Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, usually around July to September. The green season from November to May is equally special, with lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and excellent birdwatching. Calving season in the southern Serengeti (January–March) is another highlight, when thousands of wildebeest give birth.

2. Which national parks should I visit on my first safari?

For a first-time safari, the Northern Circuit offers the most iconic experiences. Parks like Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, and Lake Manyara National Park provide a rich diversity of wildlife and stunning scenery. These parks can be visited in one trip, and each offers a different ecosystem and unique sightings. Serengeti is famed for the migration, Ngorongoro for its dense concentration of wildlife in a volcanic caldera, Tarangire for its massive elephant herds and baobab trees, and Manyara for tree-climbing lions and diverse birdlife.

3. Is a safari safe?

Yes, safaris in Tanzania are generally very safe when conducted with experienced guides and reputable tour operators like Vanda Tours. Our guides are professionally trained and licensed, and safety is our top priority. All our vehicles are well-maintained and equipped with first aid kits and radios. We brief our clients on safari etiquette and safety rules, such as not getting out of the vehicle during game drives and maintaining a safe distance from wild animals.

4. What type of accommodation is available on safari?

Tanzania offers a wide range of safari accommodations to suit different budgets and preferences. You can choose from luxury lodges, mid-range tented camps, or budget camping safaris. Luxury options come with en-suite bathrooms, fine dining, and stunning views. Mid-range accommodations offer comfort with authenticity, often blending canvas and solid structures. Budget camping offers a more rugged experience with tents and shared facilities, perfect for adventurous travelers looking for value.

5. How do I get to the safari starting point?

Most safaris begin in either Arusha or Moshi, depending on your itinerary. You’ll likely fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which serves both towns. If your safari begins in the south (e.g., Selous or Ruaha), you might arrive at Dar es Salaam and take a local flight to the park. Vanda Tours provides airport transfers and all ground logistics as part of your package.

6. How long should a safari last?

The ideal safari duration depends on the number of parks you want to visit. A 3 to 4-day safari can cover highlights like Ngorongoro and Tarangire or Manyara. A 6 to 8-day safari allows for a deeper experience including the Serengeti. For those seeking a more relaxed pace or to visit less-touristy parks, 10 to 14 days is perfect. We help customize your trip based on your time, interests, and budget.

7. Do I need a visa to enter Tanzania?

Yes, most travelers require a visa to enter Tanzania. You can obtain it on arrival at the airport or online via the official Tanzania eVisa system. A single-entry tourist visa typically costs $50 USD (or $100 USD for U.S. citizens). Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and have at least one blank visa page.

8. Is tipping expected on safari?

Tipping is customary and appreciated in the safari industry in Tanzania. As a guideline, for safari guides, $10–$20 USD per guest per day is considered a generous tip. For lodge and camp staff, $5–$10 USD per guest per day placed in a communal tip box is suitable. Always tip according to the quality of service and your personal satisfaction.

9. What animals can I expect to see on safari?

Tanzania is home to the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. In addition, you’ll encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, hippos, hyenas, crocodiles, antelopes, warthogs, baboons, monkeys, and hundreds of bird species. Each park offers different viewing opportunities depending on the season and terrain.

10. What is a typical day like on safari?

A typical safari day starts early, around 6:00–7:00 am, for the best wildlife activity. After a morning game drive, you return to camp for breakfast and rest. Some days include a packed lunch for full-day drives. Afternoon game drives begin around 4:00 pm, ending by sunset. Evenings are spent enjoying dinner and stories around the campfire under the stars.

11. Can children go on safari?

Yes, children can absolutely go on safari and often enjoy the experience just as much as adults. Many lodges are family-friendly and offer special activities or guides for kids. However, some lodges have age restrictions, and very young children may not be allowed on all game drives for safety. We recommend safaris for children aged 6 and above, and we can tailor itineraries to suit families.

12. Will I have internet or mobile signal during safari?

While many lodges and camps offer Wi-Fi, especially in common areas, connectivity can be limited or slow, particularly in remote areas like the Serengeti. Mobile coverage exists in some parks, especially near entry gates or towns, but it’s best to be prepared for periods without signal. Safaris are a perfect opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in nature.

13. What should I pack for safari?

Pack light and practical clothing in neutral colors (khaki, beige, olive) for wildlife viewing. Bring long sleeves and pants for evenings, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, and personal medication. A full packing guide is available on our website or on request.

14. Do I need any vaccinations for safari in Tanzania?

Travelers are advised to consult with their healthcare provider before traveling. The Yellow Fever vaccination is required if you're arriving from a Yellow Fever endemic country. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended, and routine vaccinations such as Hepatitis A, B, Typhoid, and Tetanus should be up to date.

15. Can I combine a safari with a beach holiday or Kilimanjaro trek?

Absolutely. One of the best things about Tanzania is the ability to combine different experiences. After your safari, many travelers fly to Zanzibar for a relaxing beach holiday. Others begin their trip with a Mount Kilimanjaro climb and follow it with a safari. Vanda Tours can create a seamless itinerary that blends trekking, wildlife, and coastal bliss.
