This Kilimanjaro packing list is designed to help you stay warm, dry, comfortable, and energized throughout your trek.
The weather on Kilimanjaro varies drastically by altitude – from warm and sunny at the base to freezing temperatures at the summit. You’ll need to pack in layers to adapt quickly to these changes.
2-3 long-sleeved thermal tops
2-3 thermal leggings
These are your next-to-skin layers that wick sweat and keep you dry.
1-2 fleece jackets or down mid-layers
Insulated synthetic/down jacket (for summit night)
Warm trekking pants
Waterproof, breathable rain jacket (Gore-Tex or similar)
Waterproof pants (full side-zips preferred for layering)
2–3 moisture-wicking t-shirts
1–2 pairs of hiking trousers
1 pair of shorts or convertible pants (for lower altitudes)
Comfortable, warm clothes for sleeping (e.g., fleece or merino wool)
Waterproof, broken-in boots with good ankle support
Lightweight sandals or slip-ons for use in the camp
4–6 pairs of trekking socks (wool or synthetic)
1–2 pairs of liner socks (optional to prevent blisters)
Warm hat (covering ears)
Sun hat or wide-brim hat
Balaclava or buff (for dust and cold)
Sunglasses (UV protection, glacier suitable)
Inner gloves (thin, liner gloves)
Outer gloves (insulated and waterproof for summit night)
Four-season sleeping bag (rated at -10°C to -15°C or lower)
Sleeping bag liner (adds warmth and keeps bag clean)
Inflatable or foam sleeping mat (if not provided)
30–35L daypack with rain cover (for personal items during hike)
80–100L waterproof duffel bag (carried by porters)
Reusable water bottles (2–3L total capacity) or hydration bladder
Headlamp with spare batteries (essential for summit night)
Trekking poles (adjustable, shock-absorbing recommended)
Quick-dry towel
Toiletries and hygiene items (biodegradable soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, wet wipes, hand sanitizer)
Sunscreen (SPF 30+), lip balm (with SPF)
Small first aid kit (including altitude meds if needed)
Snacks (energy bars, trail mix, electrolytes)
Power bank or solar charger
Camera or GoPro
Gaiters (for scree and mud)

Note: Your porters will carry up to 15 kg of your main luggage (duffel bag), while you will carry your daypack. Be sure to pack thoughtfully and prioritize essentials.
