Kilimanjaro Packing List

When preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, packing the right equipment is critical to your safety and success. You should bring layered clothing to adapt to varied climates, as temperatures can range from hot at the base to freezing at the summit.

Essential clothing includes:

  • Base layers (thermal tops and bottoms)

  • Insulating layers (fleece, down jacket)

  • Waterproof outer layer (jacket and pants)

  • Trekking pants and T-shirts

  • Warm hat, sun hat, and balaclava or neck gaiter

  • Gloves (inner liners and insulated waterproof outer gloves)

Other must-haves:

  • Waterproof hiking boots (well broken-in)

  • Headlamp with extra batteries

  • Daypack (20-30L) and duffel bag (70-90L)

  • Sleeping bag (rated for -10°C or lower)

  • Trekking poles

  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm

  • Water bottles and/or hydration bladder (3L total)

  • Personal toiletries, wet wipes, and hand sanitizer

Porters carry your duffel bag; you only carry your daypack.

Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the best months offer clear skies, great views, and lower chances of rain.

  • Best Climbing Months:
    January – March and June – October
    These months offer the most stable weather. January to March tends to be quieter and colder, while June to October is busier but drier.

  • Avoidable Months:
    April – May and November are rainy seasons. Trails can be muddy, and summit visibility is often poor.

Pre- and Post-Climb Logistics
